Watching the BAFTAs last night and seeing how The Artist deservedly scooped so many awards made me wonder how the film will fare at the Oscars at the end of the month in the very different environment outside Europe.
Director Michel Hazanavicius and lead actor Jean Dujardin accepted their awards in beautiful, if delightfully-accented English and even threw in some jokes.
In America, being able to speak French (even badly) appears to be something of a drawback, if Mitt Romney is to be believed. It will be interesting to see how the voting in the States differs from the voting here.
My money is on awards for The Descendants, Moneyball and maybe even The Iron Lady, rather than on a black and white, silent movie made by a bunch of cheese-eating surrender monkeys!
Let's hope I'm proved wrong!
